Confidential Diaries: Home is Where You Make It

Confidential Diaries: Home is Where You Make It

Being on tour means living in close quarters. I share a bus with Maks, Shai, our nanny, and, until a week ago, my mum, in a convoy that includes 3 trailers and 4 buses for a few dozen dancers, crew members, stage hands, and assistants. Even though everyone gets along great, it’s still a lot to get used to.

When we decided to do the tour, leaving Shai behind was never an option. There were a lot of fears and unknowns. How do we get him in a routine? What happens when he gets bored? Will he like being surrounded by people all the time? What we did know was that this would be a new experience for him, and it was up to us to make it a good one.

So, with this tour, we’ve tried our best to make the bus and venues a home away from home with as much time together, play and routine as possible. We roll into a venue and set up Shai’s playroom (we way over-packed, by the way). Cook good, healthy meals in the bus’s kitchenette. And go exploring whenever time and the weather allows – we went for a walk by the harbor in Wilmington and visited an Amish farm in Lancaster. His favorite thing is to inspect the venue with his dad in the morning – a fan even gave him a little inspector hat, which is absolutely perfect.

So far, it’s been amazing!

As parents, you can’t believe how thankful Maks and I are for that. Thankful for the fans who are so encouraging and supportive. Thankful for our amazing cast and crew who have helped make this experience great for Shai and myself. Thankful for our wonderful nanny who keeps him safe and cared for while we do this night after night. And thankful for Shai, who has taken to life on the road like a little champ.

Shai has become like our little mascot. Wherever we go, whoever we meet, Shai is the center of attention. And, because he’s grown into such a little ham, he loves that. The crew members love him. The bus drivers can’t wait to high-five him. The fans have shown him so much love on social media and at the shows. Everyone wants to see him and be a part of his life and I’m just super-grateful that he’s happy.

I know being on tour will never feel like home, but knowing that my family is happy, healthy and together? It’s closer than I ever could have hoped for.
