I’ve gotten quite a few questions about Shai’s nursery, so I want to take a few minutes to share the inspiration behind its design and give some shoutouts to the people and companies that made it possible.
When it came to the nursery, I knew what I wanted, just not necessarily how to make it happen. I knew I wanted something that said boy without screaming it and neutral enough that, with a few accessory changes, I could maybe someday use it for a little girl’s room – not to get too ahead of myself, of course.
But the room itself presented a challenge. There were some significant architectural hurdles to overcome like a fireplace that jut into the room, some weird nooks and three pillars. It had a lot of character, but had to be made into something that was kid-friendly and functional.
We needed an expert.
As if in some divine design intervention, the über talented Vanessa Antonelli and her team offered to create this space for us in exchange for some pretty pictures of the finished product. After meeting with her and seeing her amazing work (seriously, check out @thenessalee on Instagram to see some of her other nursery transformations), we jumped at the opportunity.
The process started with a good chat. She got to know our tastes, preferences, dislikes and really just eased us into this project in such a supportive way. Together, we made a collage with different styles we liked – colors, accents, furniture, wallpaper, and even toys. And, eventually, she began to get a feel for what we wanted out of the space.
It took a few drafts and some emails, but we finally found a design that we fell in love with. From then on, it was on.
A steady stream of carpenters, electricians, painters, and wallpaperers prepped the room, and, piece-by-piece, it all came together (don’t worry, I’ll give you all the details to recreate the look at the end of the post). From the clean but classic crib and dresser to the elephant mounted above the fireplace, our vision was realized. A little whimsical and a lot luxurious, our weird little room became a nursery built for a prince.
Months later, we’re still in love with how Shai’s nursery turned out. The custom-made cream and crushed velvet rocker was so clutch in those first few months. Not only is it visually stunning, it’s so comfortable to nurse and sleep in. And Shai loves the gold shelving we have above his changing table – probably because that’s where we hang his favorite doggie toy so he can kick at it when we’re changing his diapers. 🙂
I literally cannot say enough about Vanessa. Not only did she produce this incredible sanctuary for my little Shai, she’s an amazingly beautiful person inside and out. She helped create this amazing space that I can see future little Chmerkovskiys growing up in and loving, too.
