Bringing Old Hollywood Glam to Our Wedding

In case you hadn’t noticed, I’m all about the timeless looks – elegance, glamour and striking that balance between detail and simplicity. Think: Old Hollywood for a modern era. So when it came to styling my wedding, I really wanted to capture that feel but make it unique to my personal tastes.

It all started with The Dress. For the ceremony, I rocked a one-of-a-kind princess gown. The fitted, off-the-shoulder bodice was adorned with hand sewn white pearls and crystals and the skirt consisted of bias-cut, 2-tone organza strips and tulle strips to give it a waterfall illusion. The gown itself took over 8 months, 10 workers, 2 beaders, 8,000 white pearls and crystals, 800 yards of organza, 500 yards of tulle. It was delicate and unique and absolutely perfect.

I started out with all of the usual couture labels, but never found one that ticked all my boxes. They were beautiful dresses, obviously, but none of them screamed “Peta.” I wanted my day to be perfect and I knew that the only way I could get that is by designing my dresses myself.

I was 4 months pregnant with Shai, so it was hard to get too enthusiastic about trying on gowns. Fortunately, Nicole (Maks’ “sister” and my best friend) took me to see Karen Sabag (funnily enough, right near our venue, Oheka Castle). I was immediately blown away by her work! The detail and precision was like nothing I’d seen. And her studio was very much my style: glamorous yet classic.

We clicked immediately. She knew exactly what I was looking for and, together, we drew up designs for my rehearsal dress, wedding gown and reception dress. Even though I was a good 15 pounds heavier, she kept reminding me that it was still a year away and that I’d look and feel amazing.

I knew I’d have a lot going on with my gown and reception dress, so I sought to balance it out by keeping my hair and makeup simple. My hair was done by Mustafa Avci, who is a true artist and a master of the Hollywood wave. Despite his best efforts to make my hair bigger (and suggestions from others to do more) I opted for a medium-sized, sleek high bun that wouldn’t overpower my long, dramatic veil.

My makeup, done by the amazing Tobi Henney, I loved from the very first trial. I didn’t want to be wearing so much makeup that Maks wouldn’t recognize who was walking down the aisle, so we went with a fresh and flawless look with subtle color, contouring, and a pinky-nude lip.

My bridesmaids were styled in beautiful blush mermaid gowns. The sweetheart bodice and one shoulder illusion neckline paired with the flowing tulle flare. For their bridesmaids’ gifts, I gave them each a pair of rose gold and diamond earrings and gave them free reign with their buns to show them off – high, low, sleek or swirled, I told them to do whatever they thought what looked best on them – And carried through the fresh and flawless look with their makeup. (Seriously, how gorgeous so they look?!)

I also worked with Karen Sabag to design my rehearsal and reception dresses.

For my rehearsal Shabbat dinner dress, I opted for a silk cotton white corset cocktail number. The bodice is trimmed with Chantilly lace and in the back there’s a sweet double French bow. Oh, and I let Mustafa have a little fun with a flirty side-part wave. 😉

I call this one “The Feathers Gown.” There were more than 300 ostrich feathers hand sewn on the sheer netting bodice and A-line skirt. For a finishing touch, I added a belt of pearls and pearl bottoms to the back.

Of course, I couldn’t talk about wedding style without talking about my Prince Charming. Maks wore a crème Tom Ford tux and vintage Louis Vuitton shoes, that were classic and classy and fit him perfectly. The man can literally wear anything, though. Maybe I’m biased, but he’s the hottest man I’ve ever seen. And the crème against his skin? A-MA-ZING. Definitely the best I’ve ever seen him look – which is saying a lot.

Maks and I went through countless images to find the perfect groomsmen tuxes. We wanted to them to be similar to Maks’s, but not exactly the same. So we decided on crème tuxedos with lapels trimmed in black satin for a little contrast, paired with bowties, a crisp white shirt, and spotted socks Maks gave them as a groomsmen’s gift.

It’s funny. When I was little, I used to draw pictures of my wedding day. Me, in a beautiful off-the-shoulder gown, standing next to the dark haired man of my dreams. I guess childhood dreams can come true.
